The shell is made of pig iron, and water flows out from the inlet through the lower annular space of the shell, which is called the "lower annular chamber". Above this annular space, there is an "upper ring chamber" that communicates with the water outlet. There is a filter screen with small holes at the bottom of the sleeve to filter out impurities in the water. There are two rows of circular holes on the side of the sleeve, which are located exactly opposite the upper and lower ring chambers of the shell. Obviously, the lower row is the inlet hole and the upper row is the outlet hole. It is particularly noteworthy that both rows of holes are drilled diagonally along the tangent direction of the circle. Note that the directions of the two rows of holes are opposite. Water flows into the lower outlet along the tangent direction, inevitably forming a rotating water flow, which is crucial for the operation of the water meter. The inner core is divided into three layers: upper, middle, and lower. The upper layer can be seen from the glass window, with only the pointer and dial. The key is actually the lower layer, which has a plastic wheel with many plastic blades called "impellers" on the edge of the wheel.
The position of the impeller is exactly within the rotating flow formed by the lower hole of the casing. The water flow impacts the blades around the impeller, generating torque and causing the impeller to rotate. The larger the faucet is turned on, the faster the water flow, and the faster the impeller rotates.
The shaft of the impeller reaches the middle layer vertically upwards, and there is a small gear on the shaft that meshes with the "decimal gear" to achieve the purpose of accumulating revolutions. The function of the "decimal gear" is that every time the single digit gear rotates ten times, the ten digit gear rotates once. In other words, if a single digit gear rotates once, a ten digit gear rotates one tenth of a turn. The single digit gear is the driver, relying on it to drive the ten digit gear. In fact, each level of decimal is completed using two pairs of gears to ensure consistent rotation direction. One pair has a transmission ratio of 9:30 and the other pair has a transmission ratio of 10:30. These two pairs are connected in series, and the total transmission ratio is the product of these two, which is 0.099999, which can be approximated as 0.1. According to this calculation, if you want to read seven digits (four decimal places before the decimal point are black marks, and three decimal places after the decimal point are red marks), you need to use 12 pairs of gears. In addition to other uses, 18 shafts and 34 gears need to be squeezed into this small space in the middle, which can also be considered high-density installation. This type of water meter, with its simplicity and low cost, can be used for a long time in humid environments without maintenance, and does not require a power supply. Power outages also do not affect its operation, and it will continue to serve for a long time.
